The best part of Argentiere...is its up close to the most wonderful of the steep deeps in the world, at Les Grands Montets. As you know, the summit is the best skiing in Chamonix for advanced skiers.
The village is about 15 minutes on the bus from
the main town of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc.
This little snippet of information is important when making decisions about the location of your accommodation as commuting between the expansive groomed pistes is unavoidable at this world class resort.
This lovely provincial village is serviced by the train that plys the valley from St Gervais to Vallorcine. It services the very best skiing in Cham - there is nothing that would compare to the Les Grands Montets.
Here's my simplified orientation map of the valley. See the location of Argentiere? It's towards the head of the valley and within easy commuting distance to the commercial center and the bustling hub of the main township as well as to the wonderful open bowls of Domaine de Balme.
This is a charming rustic village with loads of chalet and apartment accommodation. The lift terminal is on the southern side and on-snow accommodation is dependent on snow levels.
The village is more than adequately serviced with restaurants, supermarkets, coffee shops, snow sports equipment and hire as well as retail stores.
The Savoie countryside is simply beautiful with lots of opportunity for snow shoeing, alpine walkers, climbers besides snowboarding and skiing.
The Mountain Right Here
The options at Argentiere with 150 km of groomed pistes allow for all grades of ability. There's the nursery slope at the base of the terminal, excellent red and blue intermediate runs at the lower and middle sections of below Lognan and you'll find absolutely an world class experience with steep black moguled and ungroomed runs starting right from the top of the mountain.
This world famous region is vast! Skiers vacationing at
Cham return again and again to this part of the Alps. We did because the snow
sports experience at Grands Montets is unsurpassed.
Transport In the Valley
Public transport by train and bus is free for skiers on a valid pass as well as for non-skiers with a carte d'hote. Find out more. The free buses take you directly to the lift terminals at all the 5 major regions.
The buses and trains are frequent so it is an easy commute to the lovely high end shopping in the main town centre . Just take care to note the last times for the night bus. Here's the official Night Bus Timetable, otherwise it'll be an expensive taxi fare.
Is it worth staying here?
The upside is, it is much better value for accommodation here compared to the center of town, and of course, you are right next to the very best groomed areas in Cham.
The downside is, it really is just a village, albeit a charming one. If you want to be where the action is, and just be where the energy is happening, you will need to get yourself into town. The free buses don't operate all hours, so be sure to budget for taxis, which are not exactly cheap.
