Here are some amazing fun facts about Chamonix
Chamonix Mont Blanc, in keeping with its reputation as the "Death Sports Capital Of The World", is also the location of historic land mark events. The very First Winter Olympics in 1924, was hosted right here in the Valley.
Mont Blanc was scaled by hardy Alpinists based here at Chamonix Mont Blanc, at the turn of the twentieth century. Mont Blanc, as you may know is the highest peak in Western Europe and once this was conquered, Alpinists including the famous British mountaineer, Malory, would practice on this mountain prior to the ascent of Everest.
In the twenty-first century, in 2013, two hardy skiers and parachutists successfully descended Mont Blanc in the record breaking time of 15 minutes! This amazing feat which was filmed, commenced from the top of Mont Blanc, where they leapt off the mountain on para-sails, skied the base of the mountain, hopped onto bicycles and raced into the center of town. It turns out that Chamonix Mont Blanc is also a cultural venue with Cosmo Jazz presenting world class Jazz events in a natural amphitheater at Les Grands Montets. The beautiful Korean Jazz vocalist Youn Soun Nah was accompanied by the Swedish Jazz Guitarist, Ulf Wakenius at the festival in 2013. Look out for more of Cosmos events in Cham.
