Aiguille du Midi Cable Car

The Southern Part of Chamonix Around The Aiguille du Midi:

This is a precinct of Chamonix Mont Blanc south of the river L'Arve. It's about a 10 minute walk from the center in town at Place Balmat. Go to the end of the paved pedestrian mall at Rue du Docteur Paccard and turn left at Avenue d' Aiguille du Midi.

As you cross the bridge, you'll see the little train stop on your right (Sud) and at this corner is the free "mulet" shuttle stop (also Sud).  Look ahead and you'll see an enormous building dominating the end of the street.

This is the Aiguille du Midi cable car terminal building and is the starting point for the off-piste adventure down Valle Blanche, skiing the very dangerous glacier.  The views from the top are fantastic and going up this cable car should be on your itinerary even if you're not skiing at Cham.

In this sud part of town, there's a fun Korean Restaurant close by to the cable car building.

This precinct has heaps of blocks of modern block-type apartment buildings and low budget type stores.  This area, is unfortunately in the constant shadow of the massive range of mountains and Mont Blanc and in winter appears the Sud precinct is dank and even the railway side of town is cheerier.

Shopping here is budget and the price of accommodation reflects the standard in this section of Chamonix Mont Blanc Sud.

Remember, the Aiguille du Midi lift, the only lift in this Sud part of Cham, does not service any groomed pistes. To get to the pistes, you'll need to catch either the ski bus or the mulet to the bus hub for buses to the vast ski areas.  But having said that, the resort is so massive,  transport is necessary to any of the groomed pistes.

Transport:

The free ski bus and the "mulet" service this area.  The closest train stop is at Chamonix Sud close to the corner of Ave d' Aiguille du Midi and Rue du Docteur Paccard.

Closest Skiing

The mulet will take you from Chamonix Sud part of town to other stops where there are pistes in town such as the beginners area of Les Planards at the le Gare/railway station and La Savoy near the Mummery stop and to the extensive beginners and intermediate area via the telecabin lifts at Brevent.
