Are you about to ski Courmayeur Italy? This page has a brief review on the village and the best places to ski for advanced and intermediate skiers.
Courmayeur Italy, is a totally brilliant skiing experience. The skiers across the border in Chamonix France, think so too which is why the buses from Chamonix to Courmayeur are packed each morning. They're so popular that even in non-peak times, you still have to book a seat a couple of days ahead.
The Unlimited pass only entitles you to a seat on the bus to Courmayeur. But these days, it costs.
You'll find the lovely ancient village on the Italian side of Mont Blanc has an inimitable charm. But I think it's not just the lovely village with its cobbled streets, but the excellent skiing that brings skiers back year on year.
Courmayeur Italy, was once a favorite mountain retreat for the idle rich of Turin and Milan, the main industrial cities in Northern Italy. It is relaxed and a little more affordable than the French ski resorts across the border. The charming winding lanes are the place to be seen and to see fur-clad stylish Italian women doing some high end shopping at these lovely stores.
The building of the Mont Blanc Tunnel is likely to have enhanced Courmayeur 's popularity but the main part of the old city appears to have survived the onslaught of more tourists. Surrounding the old village are modern apartment buildings.
The ticketing area is modern and efficient.
Catch the cable car up to Plan Checrouit, a high plateau on the other side of the valley. Enjoy the beautiful views of Mont Blanc and its glaciers. You'll find a plentiful variety of runs that commence from here and more cable cars to take you further up the mountain.
You can ski off-piste to the Vallee Blanche Chamonix. At the glacier, you'll join up with the skiers starting from the French side. But, please, take a ski guide. You'll need to be kitted out with ropes, shackles and beacon locators. Skiing the Valle Blanche is a most unique skiing experience and well worth it!
The ski resort at Courmayeur caters perfectly for intermediate skiers. You'll have a huge amount of fun exploring the mountain - there are any number of decent blue and red pistes across the resort. Our favourites were around Peindient.
For advanced skiers, go to the top of Arp for the spectacular long run to Plan de la Gabba. It's steep but regular and broad. Read further about skiing at Courmayeur Italy.
Courmayeur is merely a 20 minute's bus ride from the extensive slopes of Chamonix. The village of Argentiere which is the access village to the steep, deep pistes of Les Grands Montets is a further 15 minutes away by car. This is an excellent day's excursion for advanced and intermediate skiers.
If you're in this area during the Downhill World Cup Events, make the effort to visit and ski Les Houches. Les Houches is a little south of the town of Chamonix Mont Blanc and is the home of the famed Kandahar piste. The World Cup Alpine events are held on the Kandahar.
Megeve is also across the tunnel towards Geneva. The slopes are gentler here and you'll find skiers and visitors here, are somewhat more elegant.
Have fun on your vacation to ski Courmayeur Italy!
